Their stay in Hailey at the time, however, was not long enough to immerse themselves in their planning. By that summer of 1992, they were both preparing to go back to work. Willis, who had now been absent from the screen for at least a year, had finally concluded a new picture deal, which at least looked good on paper. It was a project for producer Arnon Milchan, with a working title of Three Rivers, later changed to Striking Distance. Filming would commence that autumn for release exactly one year later.
Demi, on the other hand, would have two films released in the same period. A Few Good Men was due to hit the screens in December 1992, with Indecent Proposal due out in the following April. As far as she was concerned Adrian Lyne’s movie was the one. It would bring her the two things she had so longed for. A five million dollar pay cheque – her highest to date - and more importantly, propel her into the Hollywood superstar ranking. With second billing to Robert Redford, how could she fail?
But before that, she had concluded that her public profile would benefit from another timely boost – to signal her forthcoming rise to eminence, and to let the world know, too, that Bruce Willis was alive and well and about to start working on a new movie. Once again she went into a huddle with photographer Annie Leibovitz who had produced her pregnancy pictures almost a year earlier. Seemingly prepared to forgive Vanity Fair the ‘horrible’ article that accompanied that bodily exposure. She had objected to the raking over of her past, and even more to some bitchy quotes from industry insiders. All the same, they were now plotting another big hit.
The philosophy of that old Hollywood adage about all publicity being good publicity still held firm. Indeed, Demi had already made a clinical study of the publicity machine that operated during the Golden Age of Hollywood, discovering how the studios and the stars would always work together to achieve maximum impact for whatever movie they were promoting at the time – or if not, to massage the image of a star.
She too, had worked out her own technique of media manipulation, attempting a measure of control over the presentation of herself to the public, and of the photographic approval in exchange for her co-operation. It didn’t always work, as she couldn’t always control the editorial matter in a magazine like Vanity Fair. She had no choice but to accept what they wrote. Some, however, like Hello! were willing to be uncontroversial just to be guaranteed an interview.
But even better than that, she now had another news stand special up her sleeve for the cover of Vanity Fair. And she was going naked again, to demonstrate how she had transformed herself from ‘nude Madonna to sleek siren’. As ever, she wanted it done with style and sophistication – but with a completely different approach than before. At the time,
